I appreciated the logistics of bikes and entry being taken care of, but I was really hoping to learn more on this tour, and was presented with virtually no information whatsoever about the history or significance of the site we were “touring.” It was more of a picturesque but totally boring bike ride followed by a self-guided tour of the palace. Our guide didn’t even seem to know whether or not we had access to the audio guides. If you just want a photo op, great. It wasn’t what I expected or wanted. Zero content whatsoever. Our guide was friendly, but that’s about all this 10-hour day has going for it. OH and the bus home was so hot we nearly had multiple medical situations on the bus - incredibly hot with an unapologetic driver. People were getting sick - we had to open the roof vent and I gave my water to a stranger who was ill. Not okay.
One of several tours we booked through Viator on our three country vacation Barcelona, Florence and Paris and this tour was by far the best! All the people at Fat Tire Tours Paris were really nice, smart and helpful through every aspect of the process. Worth every cent!
The Versailles palace and its historical background can be overwhelming, so it was key to have a knowledgable guide take us around and make sure we got to see all the key parts of the versailles palace gardens and landscapes. Your guide doesn't only physically take you through the area, but your guide is also providing you the French, European and world history allowing you to put the palace in context of everything that is going on at the time.
A really nice feature of the tour is that they really try take any of the hassles out of the experience. Its a long trip to Versailles, so the tour guides meet you in central Paris and accompanies you on the train Versailles. The bike shop already has everything set up for when you arrive so all you have to do is change the seat height on your bike. Once on your bike, your guide takes you through the town to the central market where your guide will tell you the best shops to get different types of wonderful food. When at Versailles they know all the sites and shortcuts as well as best picnic places. Once you have toured the grounds and sites of Versailles, they even take you inside the Palace and make sure you have your audio guides. They are really your educational and logistical concierge for the entire day and help you on so many aspects. As well, the groups are kept small 20 people to a group, so it feels very intimate and you get to know one another by the end of the day.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND OUR TOUR GUIDE NICK!! I would beg, trade spots with another person or just sneak into his group if I do this tour again. I am sure the other tour guides as also outstanding, but I can personally attest to how AMAZING Nick was after going on several other tours. He is one of the funniest, most knowledgeable people I have ever met and he had our entire group laughing and in awe of random historical European knowledge.
It's going to be a long day, but a great day and a very memorable experience. The palace and its grounds are so expansive and the bike tour really helps you see as much as possible. There are a lot of bike tour groups, but Fat Tire Tours did not disappoint and if you get Nick, I know you will have an amazing experience.
There was a strike anf it affected the trains that went from city to city within France, but the company chartered a bus for the group. Dan (tour guide) was very friendly and knowledgeable. I only wish that we had more time to see the palace rather than the grounds. The garden is also excluded.
Started out wonderful with an amazing visit to the market to load up on food for our picnic. Enjoyed the bike ride and everything we saw except we were unable to go inside the palace of Versailles, which we paid for. Although I like our guide, I think his time management prevented us from going inside the palace at the end of the tour. He gladly accepted all of our tips and basically left us to figure the end of the day out on our own. After we were rejected at the entrance, some on the tour went and bought additional tickets to get inside the palace for the final 45 minutes that it was open. I would have given this tour 5 stars if it actually delivered all it had promised. A real disappointing ending to a day that started out great.
