Giverny and Auvers dur Oise have been on my Bucket List for a long time. This trip did not disappoint...it was excellent!! Celine, our guide, picked us up at the hotel exactly as planned on time. She was an wonderful host and her passion for the artists made the trip out to our first stop at Giverny go quickly as we talked about the lives of Van Gogh and Monet. The route to Giverny is through some beautiful French countryside which was a nice change from the noise and energy of Paris. After our visit to Giverny and lunch at the postcard-scenic Moulin de Fourges, we made the short drive to Auvers sur Oise. The village and the Auberge Rouvx with Van Gogh's room seemed like we stepped back into the 1890's. It was so nice to see that the area respects Van Gogh's life here but it has not become a tourist mecca of souvenirs shops and postcards. We loved this tour and could easily do it again on a future trip.

This was a fabulous day in the french countryside. My favorite tour! Excellent guide.

Too many things irritated me on this trip. Let me try to only mention 3 of them:

1. Tour guide is more concerned with getting the whole team to lunch spot before 12:30pm, than offering a pleasant experience. Tour guide picked up two guests from hotel after everyone else was picked up by taxi and transferred to the van - why? Why them? Why not us? Why do I have to wait for those two?
However, I waited without complaining - it is a group tour small group, but still a group. I paid like 150 but not 1,500, what do I expect! However, things got worse at the end of Giverny visit. At 11:25am, the I got back to the meeting spot 5 min ahead of time, and told her that I just noticed a tourist plate says Monet's tomb is just 8 min walk away, can I please take a look, or can you please drive us there? She refused.
I pleaded.
She refused again.
Okay... my heart was bleeding inside... then two other guests spent an extra 13 min and got back to the meeting spot at 11:55am!!! This was horrible. I missed Monet's final resting place for nothing. And after this incident, the tour guide showed no willingness to make up for the lost time at all. Not even apologetic. I think it is incredibly unfair.

2. Following incident 1, I asked the tour guide - why did you not tell us Monet's tomb is also here? If you did, I could have cut my time spent in the modern art museum BTW, don't waste your time there if you've been to Art Institute of Chicago, MoMA in New York, and Museum D'Orsay like I did and run to see the tomb before 11:30am.
She said, it is just a tomb - a stone. OMG, where does the love for art and respect for this great artist go!!!???
I said, But it is Monet's! And isn't it your responsibility to give us information about the place we visit?
She said, No.
I have no words. She obviously think of herself as a driver and I obviously could have made the trip myself at a cost of 7 euros x 2 15 euros x 2, if I wanted nothing more than transportation.

3. Given all the rush we had in Giverny in the morning, guess how much time we spent at lunch? At least 2 hours!!! And the main course was so plain that you think you are in the U.K.

Lastly, allow me to mention that both towns are very well worth travelling to if you are a Monet or Van Gogh fan. Try to spend your own time leisurely in both locations. I think Giverny deserves at least 2.5 hours, and Auvers sur Oise at least 5-6 hours, given Daubigny's garden is also there, right next door to the hotel that Van Gogh stayed. If I get to do this all over again, I would have taken the trouble of going by train and spending as much time as I want in both locations.

And god knows how much I sincerely wish I could just erase all the horrible memories related to this tour guide!

The trip to Giverny and Auvers sur Oise definitely worth a day's outing. However, our tour guide functioned more as a driver rather than guide. Compared to a guide on a VIATOR trip a few days earlier this fellow offered very little information and seemed 98 focussed on time: 15 more minutes until we arrive five more minutes until we arrive let's go, let's go.... I'm glad we did the tour if only to have the transportation and a very nice lunch provided but a different, more knowledgeable, informative, guide would have made it a 5 star tour.

Herbert, our tour guide for the day, was great! He was very knowledgeable, personable, in charge, and had a great sense of humor. It was fascinating to stand in the places where some of the world's great Impressionist paintings were painted.

Very enjoyable day, especially the trip to Giverny and the lunch spot. Very frustrating trying to get in touch with Viator. Realized the same day that I had left an expensive sweater in the van, but no one would answer my phone calls to see if I could retrieve it. Think that an easy phone number would be helpful for questions and hope that the message would not continually say we are busy, call again.

This is a great though expensive tour. We were lucky to get a very good guide, Andre. He managed to tell lots of tiny details of life and work of the artists that are difficult to find in literature. Thank you Andre for a wonderful day!
