We booked this three day tour after a three day Viking extension in Edinburgh. Met at the Rabbe's tour office and were checked in quickly. There were 14 people on the mini coach and the driver/guide. Kudos to Eric- the driver/guide/host and source of so much knowledge about the many sites we saw.
The nice thing about a tour this size is that you get to know other people o n the bus, and it's small enough to be able to visit places that large coaches can't go. We saw many wonderful sites- too numerous to mention- but suffice it say that the geography of Skye is everything that you can imagine and more. The stay is Portree is charming and interesting as it's a very small community with limited hotel options which makes it that much more fun. What's interesting is that it could grow to handle more tourists but chooses to stay small and authentic.
Highly recommend this trip and if you are lucky enough to have Eric as the driver, your trip will be in for a real treat.
TLDR; disconnected with the world to see some of the most majestic views. no regrets and I loved it, but I don’t think it’s for everyone!
This tour will take you to a 3-day trip to go and see some of the most beautiful and majestic sceneries in Scotland, and arguably in the world. That said, you will have to expect long drives along small and winding roads til you get to your next destination. I was lucky enough because of relatively good weather; so the trip was overall really good and I’m glad I did this tour. Note though that you will be driving way up to the mountains - so this is the time to disconnect from the world (aka no internet, no service, no fashion statements as you’ll need to walk through diff paths).
Scotland’s gems are also not in the most iI think this tour is not for everyone so read with caution. If you’re the type to want in depth immersion or to take your time liesurely walking around, this is NOT for you. The trip was packed and we had to hop from one place to another, and I would say I spent a lot of time in the bus. I would say this is also not for you if you don’t like nature or if you’ve got a lot of it in your hometown and you’re maybe sick of it already.
It is also to be mentioned that Scotland is generally not a cheap place but this tour does not include some things which I wish were — castle entrances, cruise ride in Loch Ness, whisky tasting. It’s rather quite expensive, but I have no regrets. I would recommend to people with caution above.
Jean Paul was great! Very knowledgeable about history, and would accept counter arguments. I although I have to admit I didn’t quite understand his humor and had a difficult time understanding his thick accent too. He drove swiftly, but to be honest, there were moments when I thought we could’ve slowed down a bit as the roads were small. He was flexible enough to adjust what we wanted to do — eg whisky tasting for me and castle tour for some other guys. But I wished we had equal paced days. The first 2 days were a bit slow but the last was really packed!
The accommodations :
I did regret staying in a hotel. Maybe a b and b would have saved me some money. Hotel was just okay. Small rooms but i think it is what it is really as Skye was not built for tourists.
Overall, this was the highlight of my life in the last 5 years. No regrets!
I can't say enough good things about the Rabbie's organization in general and our guide Pete in particular. The company was welcoming, well organized and attentive. And Pete was a delight. Full of stories, jokes and anecdotes. He was always on the lookout for the best photo ops, making detours and stops when he saw an opportunity for a great photo. And most importantly, the Scottish highlands themselves are amazing, the most moving and humbling landscape I've ever seen and an experience not to be missed. If you're visiting Scotland for any amount of time, you owe it to yourself to book this trip.
I know everyone thinks their tour guide is the best but ours truly was!!! Roland made the trip absolutely magical. He is incredibly well-read, articulate, funny and engaging. His commentary was interspersed with lively Scottish music, ballads reflecting the stories he was telling or, at one point, his own rendition of You take the high road- he can even sing beautifully. I was traveling with my 20-something year old daughters and he made everyone on the tour feel welcome and comfortable. He truly has a gift for bringing Scotland to life. And we were impressed with the tour company, Rabbie's, overall. The accommodations were exactly as advertised and the company seems very well run. We met different guides on other tours during the 3 days and they all seemed to have great personalities! Having been on a tour where the guide turned out to be nothing more than a glorified bus driver, I can appreciate a company that seems to value quality tour guides.
I will definitely be back for another tour!
